Driver FAQ
Straight answers to the questions drivers ask us most — about pay, home time, our trucks, our routes, and what it’s like to drive for a family-owned trucking company that’s been doing this since 1962.
Frequently asked
The questions drivers actually ask before they apply.
01
How much do MVL drivers make?
MVL company drivers can earn $1,400 per week on average, with regional drivers paid 60 CPM. We use a three-tier experience system: drivers with under 2 years of experience start at Level 1, drivers with 2+ years move to Level 2, and drivers with 10+ years qualify for Level 3 with our highest pay rates.
We also offer detention pay, breakdown pay, and a distance bonus when you run 2,600+ miles per week.
02
What is MVL’s home time policy?
Our drivers are home most weekends. We plan restarts at your home location whenever possible, and our regional routes are designed so you’re not spending weeks away from your family. Home time is one of the main reasons drivers choose MVL and stay with us long-term.
03
Will I have the same dispatcher every week?
Yes. Every MVL driver is assigned to a dedicated dispatcher, and that person stays your dispatcher. No call centers, no rotating desks. Your dispatcher will know your name, your truck, your routes, and how you like to run.
That kind of consistency is one of the biggest reasons drivers who try MVL tend to stay with MVL.
04
What routes does MVL run?
MVL runs regional routes primarily throughout the Southeast and Midwest, covering states like Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Florida. Our drivers typically run consistent, dedicated lanes, so after a few months you’ll know your routes as well as your dispatcher does.
05
What kind of trucks does MVL run?
Our company driver fleet is well-maintained, assigned, and modern. Company drivers run 2022-or-newer Volvo and Internationals, and we’ve been adding brand-new 2027 Mack Pioneer 64T high-roof sleepers to the fleet. The Pioneers come with 76-inch sleepers, premium air-ride seating, a 1,800-watt sleeper inverter for personal electronics, an integrated parking cooler and parking heater for comfortable downtime without idling, and the full Bendix Wingman Fusion safety suite with air disc brakes front and rear. Select 2022 Cascadias are available in our lease purchase program. Every driver gets their own truck. You’re not sharing or slip-seating.
06
Is MVL a good company to drive for?
We’ve been family-owned and driver-first since 1962. That’s not a slogan. It’s how we operate. Our drivers get home most weekends, drive assigned trucks, and know their dispatcher by name. And we’ve held a Satisfactory FMCSA safety rating since 1994, which is one of the reasons our freight keeps moving and our miles stay steady even when the market gets tight. That’s why drivers who try MVL tend to stay with MVL. Don’t take our word for it. Ask a current driver.
07
How does MVL’s lease purchase program work?
MVL offers a lease purchase program for drivers who want to transition to ownership. The program is designed to be transparent and achievable — no hidden fees, no balloon payments. Contact our recruiting team for current lease purchase terms, weekly payment structure, and what you can expect to take home.
08
What benefits does MVL offer?
MVL offers health insurance, 401(k) retirement plans, paid vacation, and a pet-friendly policy for drivers who want to bring a companion on the road. We also offer driver referral bonuses and a longevity bonus that pays a percentage of your W-2 based on how long you’ve been with MVL. Benefits are available after the probationary period.
09
How often do MVL drivers get paid?
MVL drivers are paid weekly. We also offer guaranteed pay so you know your family is taken care of, with the ability to earn above the guarantee based on your miles.
10
Does MVL hire new CDL drivers?
MVL primarily looks for experienced CDL-A drivers, but we evaluate every applicant individually. You must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid Class A CDL, have a safe driving record, and pass a DOT physical and hair follicle test.
If you’re a newer driver with a clean record and a strong work ethic, we encourage you to apply. Call our recruiting team at 662-728-2220 and we’ll give you a straight answer.
11
What is MVL’s safety record?
Safety is central to how we operate and we’ve held a Satisfactory FMCSA safety rating since 1994, which is one of the reasons our freight keeps moving and our miles stay steady even when the market gets tight.
We’re proud that one of our drivers, Theodore Carouthers, has driven over 2 million miles without a DOT reportable accident since his orientation in 2009 — earning him the 2 Million Mile Gold Buffalo Award and 2023 MTA Truck Driver of the Year.
That’s a testament to the kind of professional drivers we attract and the safety culture we maintain. We invest in well-maintained equipment, regular training, and a bonus structure that rewards safe driving.
12
What safety technology do MVL trucks have?
Our newest trucks come equipped with the full Bendix Wingman Fusion safety suite: forward collision warning, active steering assist, blind spot and side object detection, and lane departure warning. They also include electronic stability control and air disc brakes on both the front and rear axles.
This kind of tech is there to help you get home safe, not to second-guess how you drive.
13
Where is MVL based?
Morgan Van Lines is headquartered in Boonville, MS. We’ve been a family-owned operation since 1962 with deep roots across the Southeast and Midwest. Our regional routes span from the Midwest down through the Gulf states.
